CHARACTER

CHARACTER NAME: Tsuzuki Asato
SERIES: Yami no Matsuei
CANON POINT: Post volume 9 / after episode 13 in the anime

LOSS: The memory and knowledge of his sister. She had a huge impact on him growing up, since she is the only memory of his life he seems to consider positive. Without her, it is unlikely that he will know much about gardening, cooking or dancing.

ABOUT THE CHARACTER:
When people think about shinigami (or grim reapers), they don't usually think about a cheerful, young man that offers them a helpful hand so they can put things right before moving on. That is Tsuzuki is in a nutshell.

Tsuzuki is a kind and altruistic person. He loves people, and if he can he will try to make them feel at ease. Usually he prefers to give people the benefit of the doubt, even to the point where they don't deserve it.
He likes cooking (but is poor at it, despite the fact that his sister tried to teach him. Without the memory of her, his ability will become even worse,), gardening and ball-room-dancing (which he is slightly more talented at in canon, but will be less talented at once he loses the memory of his sister).

Normally he is peace-loving and he has trouble dealing with conflicts, choosing instead to let the stress build in his body until he takes it out on himself in a negative way (like drinking or binge eating). However, if someone else is being treated badly, Tsuzuki easily takes it personally and will attempt to protect them. He was bullied very harshly when he was little, so he hates to see people go through the same, whether it be physical or emotional. He will take it upon himself to defend those weaker than himself. This is because he knows how terrible it feels when no one comes to your aid. He would not defend himself in a similar situation, because he feels like he doesn't deserve it. (1)
A key element in Tsuzuki's personality is his wish to be accepted by his peers. Until Hisoka (his partner) came along, it didn't seem like Tsuzuki realized that being accepted meant being accepted for who he was. He simply tried his best to shape his behaviour in a way that would make him fit in. Tsuzuki hates the thought of being a burden to people.

Hisoka is a very important person in his life. He even claims that he (Tsuzuki) is the only one that really knows him. In a way, that is true. Tsuzuki appears to be one of the few people that knows the details of Hisoka's death - Hisoka never mention it himself. Obviously, that tends to forms a bond between people. Tsuzuki has had many partners, and the ones that stayed with him for more than two weeks were all very dear to him.

He's a procrastinator by habit. Especially when it comes to paperwork, which drives his partner crazy. "What you don't have to do today, can wait until tomorrow." could easily be his philosophy when it comes to work.

His regular motto would probably be "dessert after every meal". Tsuzuki has an oral fixation when it comes to food - especially desserts. His sweet tooth and slacker tendencies are famous in the office. He does everything he can to encourage this reputation. If people see him as a harmless - but friendly - member of the staff, then they won't notice his strange eyes. He is terrified of people thinking he has demon blood, or finding out that he killed himself. He desperately wants to be human, but doesn't consider himself one. (2) So, he hides it behind cheerfulness. (3)

In the anime Hisoka reveals that despite his joking, friendly persona, Tsuzuki takes thing seriously constantly. Despite what he comes across as initially, he is very competent when he means to. Since he can't let his mistakes go, it's important for him not to fail. If he lets people down, he blames himself to the point where it's hard to forgive himself.
Even though Tsuzuki harbours a lot of darkness, he is mostly a playful, idealistic man that truly believes in the best of people, and is determined to help others in any way he can.

(1)Once very depressed, Tsuzuki revealed to Hisoka that he won’t tell anyone anything about himself, if it means inviting the scorn of Hisoka and the others. He even says that he "doesn’t care if he’s a cowardly man who cheats himself for doing so". To keep it in context, this is a century old man who rarely lets people know about his past out of fear of rejection, when all he wants is to feel close to people. He doesn't see how he's shooting himself in the foot.

(2) Born in 1900 in Japan, Tsuzuki's unusual purple eyes lead to the town branding him a demon. This isolation scarred him terribly, because all he wanted was to be one of them. The children's teasing escalated to the point where they ran him out of town, throwing rocks at him. After adulthood, he found himself in a hospital for eight years. He was a bit of a strange case: The medical journals explain that he survived without food or drink for several years and was completely catatonic. During the few lucid periods he had, he remembered what led up to his catatonia. Tsuzuki experienced self-hatred, guilt and despair strong enough to even bother him to this day.

(3) There is a good reason behind his reluctance to do too much of the written work. He does his job intuitively, and appears to only be a reluctant reader. Tsuzuki was also in charge of the districts in Japan that were hit by atomic bombs. One can only imagine how much guilt he had to carry over the souls he had to help through the afterlife's paperwork, especially since he takes each death very hard. He had a meltdown on the job during this time, which led to the loss of Tatsumi as a partner. It was most likely then he began to avoid the repetitive paperwork, and acquired his bad reputation.

Emotionally, he has fewer strengths. Hisoka used to say that he felt so deeply that he was giving (Hisoka) an empathy-headache. First and foremost, he is fiercely protective of people, and gladly makes sacrifices for their sake. He believes that everyone deserves to be saved. He has a gift for making people feel valued and important - which they are, to him. Tsuzuki has a very keen understanding of how emotions and dreams shape people, since he's used to having to deal with deceased souls and mourners. Ideally, he prefers to be a guidance to people in need. Tsuzuki is a person that needs to be needed in order to feel happy.

Mentally, his strengths are similar to his emotions. He creates spells with the same delicate, focused way he treats vulnerable people. He remembering incantations as easily as he remembers faces, plus he can keep a (surprisingly!) cool head in certain situations. He is an excellent actor.

Weaknesses: Cakes and other sugary things, as well as his knack for overspending (shinigami are notoriously underpaid). Tsuzuki has many flaws although he tries to downplay them for laughs: He abuses alcohol and occasionally gets himself into danger when he has one of his manic depressive episodes. One of his biggest weaknesses is that he shows signs of a co-dependent personality-type and whenever he tries to protect someone it has a habit of backfiring. In fact, practically everyone important in his life leaves him, and it makes him extremely insecure. He does not possess a lot of self-worth, and he lets other people's opinion of him shape his own opinion of himself.
Tsuzuki's eyes can bother him a lot, even though they don't give him any physical pain. They remind him of the side of him he wishes to forget. At one of his lowest points he tried to remove one of them, thinking it would somehow make things better. Hisoka stopped him. If he could afford it and wasn't so clumsy, he'd probably enjoy the thought of dyed contact-lenses to disguise them.

ABILITIES:

First of all, Tsuzuki is a shinigami. That means that once he died, he was employed by the underworld and given a new body that rapidly heals itself. This is because undead and spirits can put up a fight, so shinigami needs to be resilient. Thanks to his otherwordly blood and his shinigami status, he has a healthy body that withstand a lot of damage.

It's stated in the manga that he could go for years without water or food and still live, so clearly he was either born a half-demon, or he acquired his 'gift' during his childhood years. He has a mean tolerance for alcohol and is dangerous in fights - once he leaves his pacifism behind, that is.

Tsuzuki is known for summoning shikigami, which in Yami no Matsuei are supernatural creatures and gods that aids him in his work. In fact, he is infamous for having twelve of them, when most shinigami only get a couple of them. In order to summon them one must have a very 'strong heart', because the shikigami draws power from it. Tsuzuki treats these spirits as his own family. He is also quite good at creating o-fuda, which are smaller paper spells that for example can find missing people.

THIRD-PERSON WRITING SAMPLE:

Their latest case had simply been too gruesome. Even before they went to earth, Tsuzuki took an early lunch, hiding away by the foot of one of the ancient cherry trees. Coming down to the cherry grove to clear his thoughts was something that happened frequently, because often the cases haunted him longer than they should. Looking at the petals dancing on the wind reminded him that all things had to change and disappear, even memories that felt like they would be imprinted forever. To others "all things must come to an end" sounded sad, but to Tsuzuki they were a reminder that pain didn't have to last forever. At least that was how it had felt to him, when he crossed over.

He picked up the case file he had brought along with him. Their newest victim was a teenager, killed by something supernatural. They had only found pieces of her body, which made him feel terrible for her parents. Tsuzuki only hoped her soul would still be unharmed, that the spirit hadn't tried to devour her too. It was a case that made him incredibly concerned. Not only was the girl still in danger, but this was a case that could hurt his partner, too. Empaths needed to pay special attention when they dealt with spirits who devoured others. There were some attacks that you simply didn't recover from.

Tsuzuki avoid the grisly pictures of the crime scene, and instead picked out a photo that clearly showcased her face. He got up from his little refuge, gathered all the papers and slowly made his way back to the office. If he hurried back, there could still be some cinnamon rolls left in the lunch break room. If they were going to deal with the spirit properly, he needed to do so on a full stomach, and Tatsumi had made it clear they couldn't afford to eat out again. There was a budget he needed to think about.

Tsuzuki had tried to convince him that a few visits to restaurants wouldn't hurt, but his old partner had been adamant about it. He suspected that Tatsumi was more worried about the budget than he let on. Their department didn't get a lot of funding, and Tatsumi did his best with the little they got.

As he got closer to the building, he noticed a fair-haired person exiting the large front door. Hisoka must have noticed that he wasn't around. It made him smile to know that his partner worried enough about him to come look for him. Even though his mind was still on the sobering case they had been assigned, he tried to put on a happy face for the teenager.

"Hisoka! Over here!" he called out cheerfully, waving like a big kid. Even from a distance he could see Hisoka roll his eyes at his antics. It embarrassed the empath when he didn't act his age.

"What are you doing out here, you idiot? We're just about to begin!"

"I'm coming!"

FIRST-PERSON JOURNAL SAMPLE: [ 100 WORDS MINIMUM. In the first-person voice, write as if the character were making an entry in their journal, ideally using little to no action descriptors. It should be long enough to show that you have a grasp of the character's voice.

OPTIONAL: If you prefer, you may link to sample threads in place of writing a 100 word sample. The replies from your character should equal or exceed 100 words. ]

INTENT: In the game I hope that he will eventually learn to be emotionally brave, so he can let people into his life without fearing their rejection. I also heard rumours of the others in Paradisa already having befriended the main villain in Tsuzuki's canon. (a man called Muraki) so I am interested in playing Tsuzuki in a game where Muraki is believed to be a good guy.
